A safe water supply

As well as being wary of uncomfortable heat, it's also worth taking a look at where your local water supply comes from before picking a location that relies on a lot of shipped-in water to stay habitable. In the past, whole civilizations have vanished when it becomes too difficult to supply water to a region as rivers dry up. There are regions in the world today where a fragile existence is teetering on the brink of devastating drought.

Take much of Arizona in the US. Here you will see lush lawns and fountains in what is by nature a desert state. The cost of this in water terms is huge. With declining amounts of water available from the Colorado River, which supplies swathes of Arizona through a canal, there will come a time – and it's not far off – when the water will simply stop. Short of the highly expensive route of shipping water in by tanker, the cities of Arizona will begin to die. Phoenix will certainly risk having some ashes to rise from. When looking to buy in a naturally dry region, look beyond the carefully irrigated lawns. Where does the water come from? Is the supply sustainable? Such considerations should come high on your list, because this is no longer a 'some time, never' kind of problem, it's more likely to be a 'next few years' thing, and you could see your property plummeting in value, or may even face having to abandon your home.
